The Alabama Miracle Puppies

It was a dark night... on a dark road... on a Saturday night in Dale County, Alabama. We're driving home from the Sony employee picnic... My DBF Kenny suddenly slams on the brakes. Out in front of us are puppies... 3... 4... more? Playing in the road.

Fast forward half an hour... we have SEVEN puppies in the car - filthy, stinky, flea-ridden, terrified babies who have obviously been abandoned.   Seven baths and seven Capstar tablets later (not to mention a few blenderfulls of dog food & milk), the clean & flea-free pups are sleeping soundly in our drained hot tub.

Sunday morning we survey the situation. We have four girls and three boys, ranging in size from five pounds to eleven pounds. So skinny - great big heads on emaciated little bodies. But sweet... oh my... so sweet you can't stand it. From the looks of their tiny little teeth, we guess they're eight to nine weeks old. Some sort of shepherd mix... who knows?

So... here we are... we have seven puppies in our back yard added to our three dogs makes TEN canines in our little family. I think that's a few too many, although I could be convinced otherwise (did I mention how SWEET these little guys are?).

Okay, to continue the story...   We hauled them all off to the vet. Got them their shots and other needed medications - for worms, etc. But the vet agreed that overall, they're fine little pups. We beam with pride.

Obviously, we need to find homes for our little friends. The pups are friendly, intelligent (taught a few of them to sit in 45 seconds), CALM , respectful and (did I mention?) sweet. I've never felt so LOVED in all my life!

We have Spike - one of the big boys, yet a bit of a scaredy cat. He's beautiful - a perfect speciman of ... whatever he is. He's a terrific cuddler.  He fell off our deck this weekend, so he's nursing a sore leg. He's a great patient!

Then there's Peaches - one of the runts - who has the rest of the pack under her princess-like paw. One day I handed out seven bones, and she ended up with three of them.

Baba - my baby - is the smallest and neediest. She spends much of her time on my lap and she's perfected a "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy" cry that will melt your heart.

Hugger, so named for his passion for showing affection, loves to chase tennis balls. He even brings them right back!

And three more, all of whom have their own personalities and interests. As we're nursing them back to health, we're also working on their house manners and they love their lessons.

I'm begging the Active Rain community in the Deep South to help me find great homes for these very special puppies. They will NOT be going to a shelter... they came into my world for a reason and I won't let them down. Even if it means driving across the countryside to deliver them to their new home.

If nothing else, please send your good wishes. I'm sure the pups will appreciate it. THANK YOU!

Jennifer

They are so adorable! I have 2 dogs already or I would love to take one home with me. Nothing like a puppy to lift your spirits. Dogs are so devoted and loyal. You gotta love them!

Bless you for the thought! Actually, it's funny - they are SO low maintenance -  I have a Jack Russell who is as much trouble all on her own as all seven of these pups!!!

I am not real good at classifying dogs.  What breed are they?  Or Breed(s)?  They are soo adorable.

OMG they are sooo cute!  I love the one with the black and white nose and brown and white spots!  Adorable!  They definitely look like some sort of shepherd mix (with beagle maybe?)  Very cute!!

Theron, I think they are... mutts. "Hound-dogs." I read somewhere that when mutts mate... they eventually create the "generic" dog... that is... a 40 pound brown dog.

Two of them are quite small and I think they'll stay that way. The rest will probably be in the 40 pound range.

Ginger - yes, God blessed me with these guys. Not sure exactly why yet, but I will. They really are special - there's just something about them.

Kelly - Peaches thinks you are very cute too.

They are the cutest pups, I wish I was closer.  I know you will find them good homes.

I can't tell you how cool that is that you guys did that!  It's a big responsibility and you are to be commended for taking it on! Good luck finding them homes!

Do NOT...I repeat...do NOT give away BaBa!!!

And if I had a yard with a fence, I'd be taking a roadtrip down south.  : )

Thanks for the good wishes BOB & BETH!

Sue - Still trying to figure out how to send you a clip of "Abba Abba Abba!" You should take a road trip anyway... in all your spare time. Make the DH miss you a bit.

What a great deed you did!  I can definitely see how they can steal your heart away.  I have one just like Spike at home -- he acts tough, but is the biggest baby!  Good luck finding homes for them.  Maybe you can email photos of them to past clients - surely people you've already gotten to know well - to see if there are any possible adopters?

Ahhh, they're adorable.  How wonderful that you entered their life, Jennifer. If I wasn't gone so much, I would take either Peaches or Baba. I don't know about trekking them around on showings and listings though....although Tom Braatz does just that with his dog Lars and he claims his clients often look forward more to seeing Lars than they do to him !

Thanks for a beautiful post. You lit up my day.

Jeannie - Yes, Spike is a darling. So "tough" but a total softie. Unfortunately, my SOI is now 1300 miles away, but I'm getting the word out the best I can. We've found a great home for one, maybe two. Spike & Peaches will be next. The rest still have a little mange, so we have to hold off until they're 100% (boo hoo, not!)

Jo - These little guys would be great real estate dogs. They are SO calm and affectionate and low maintenance. I think they're destined for great things - as sappy as that sounds. They will be a blessing to a lucky few. But maybe I'm just biased.

Our instructor yesterday said more real estate agents in Ohio have been killed in recent years than policemen.  THAT scared the heck out of me!!  So I'm thinking, having a guard dog to accompany us might not be such a bad idea!?

Posted by Sue Gabriel over 12 years ago

Sue,  Really !  That is shocking.  I knew selling real estate was risky and that many realtors get killed, raped, robbed, etc, however I didn't realize it was becoming more dangerous than being a policeman/woman. Wow. I think I better sign up for that self-defense course I have been putting off.

thanks .

Jennifer, you melted my heart!  I hope that you find really great homes for your little collection of puppies.  Just like you, I'm a sucker for helpless animals!

Jo-Anne...I'm hoping he was just trying to scare us into being careful and to not become complacent.  He did say that the majority of agents who are killed were veterans...not rookies.  And because of that very reason -- complacency.  I think self-defense should be taught and be eligible for CE credit!  In the meantime, be careful out there!

So, how many do you have left with you now? Found any a new home yet?

We have six left. Two will probably find homes quickly; the other three are still on medication. I love having them around, but I know they need to find new owners to bond with!

Jennifer, the Goddess has blessed you with a cariing heart!  I wonder how many people drove past those babies and just kept on going.  I've been the proud mother of 9 dogs and 6 cats, all of them rescued, some by me.  I wouldn't trade any one of them for all the money in the world.  At the moment I have the last of nine dogs, and 5 cats.  Have been longing for a puppy, but my common sense tells me to wait till the old girl is gone so she won't have to put up with puppyhood.  But you have tempted me to ask for one of those babies.  Keep me posted will you?

Terry,

I know what you mean about the elder pupsters. Although, these puppies are SO CALM and respectful - not your typical off-the-walls-and-ceiling puppy-types. Most of the time, ALL SIX are in the house and they don't annoy me at all...

Keep me posted!

Hi again Jennifer, I just took another longing look at those beautiful babies and I think I see a little pit bull in them.  That would account for their less than rambunctious puppy hood, as pit puppies are pretty calm little things.  Would that I could take one!

What a wonderful, heartworming, and brave effort!  They are VERY lucky to have found you.  How many left???
Posted by Molly of The Pet Realty Network (Pet Realty Network) over 12 years ago
Molly - we have two left. Well, technically, three, but one will be staying here forever. BaBa worked her way into all our hearts with her BABABABABABABABABABABABA cry. The two that are left are really special and will find great homes. It's been an experience - a few times I thought my heart would break. They really are great dogs. We almost have them housebroken!

A Happy Update on the Puppies!

We have found homes for six of the seven puppies! Peaches went to her new home last night which reduced me to tears, but I'm happy for her.

Baba will be staying on with our family which makes me smile every morning (and afternoon and evening!

Ziggy is the last puppy left - the only reason she's still with us is that she's shy and hung back when people came to check out the puppies. We barely knew her until this last week and now we adore her. She's wonderful. I have no doubt she'll have a new home soon. If not, she is welcome to stay with us. She's a terrific snuggler.

Thanks for all your good wishes. I know they helped find the right homes. Please send just a few more for Ziggy!
